Origin: Mexico
Farm: Union San Pedro
Region: Sierra Sur, Oaxaca
Varietals: Mundo Novo, Pluma Hidalgo
Process: Washed
Tasting Notes:
Brazil nut, mandarin, sugary
Relax everyone, Mexico is back. Union San Pedro has returned for another year to provide us with some Mandarin sweetness and Brazil nut luxuriousness. It is one of those coffees that needs a big mug, filled to the brim and drunk deep, all day long.
The majority of coffee production in Mexico comes from smallholder farms of one hectare or less with a meager average yield of 100kg. Migration to large urban areas where employment opportunities and income levels are higher is exacerbating this crisis; in short, Mexican coffee production is at a tipping point. Our best shot at reversing this trend is to keep buying it and keep drinking it to show these talented producers that coffee production in Mexico has a future worth fighting for.
